Let’s say I want to grow on YouTube (actually I do!), let’s identify this as our primary platform. But what about a secondary platform? Another platform that might not be the one you want to build a following on, but a secondary platform to direct people to your primary platform. What would be the advantage of putting yet more time and effort into another space? Two things: other platforms allow you to build an audience with less competition and they may also enable you to reach a more targeted audience.
I’m planning on building a following on this secondary platform, directing viewers to my primary platform. Not only do you have less competition outside YouTube, but hopefully you can build a decent following on both platforms which - in theory - should get you noticed even more. The beauty of this formula however is you don’t need to just pick one ‘secondary’ platform. You can pick as many as you want, with a presence on multiple platforms directing back to the main source of content. This is a clip I recorded from a livestream with Caleb Pike, where he gave me some useful advice:
Of course it’s not that simple! You have to have decent content for each platforms. Thats where short form content come in. I’ve started uploading short 30-60 second videos to my secondary platforms, which show a brief clip from the primary video and then direct you to the full version on YouTube. This could be through a pinned comment, the description or a link in bio method like LinkTree. It’s about how you get the most out of the content you have. I hope you found something helpful in this short guide.
Elliot.
